You know when you plan an excursion and then after you are like wow that really was an excellent use of an afternoon, and you have zero doubts that maybe lazing by the water would have been just as good… well this was one of those days.
To start with, we caught a taxi from the center of Fiskardo and asked him to take us to Myrtos view point first, followed by Assos.
We decided not to go down to Myrtos beach as we had read that the view from the top is the best bit and the beach is not easy to swim from. In terms of effort to reward, just driving to the top and having a look was extremely lucrative!

Having taken the obligatory snaps, we continued on down the winding path to Assos, from where the view back across to Myrtos was just as beautiful.
Assos itself is so very tiny and there are really only a couple places to get a drink, all of which were busy and expensive. Nevertheless we got some cold drinks to pass some time before deeming the sun low enough in the sky to start the climb up to the castle. We were there in late September, late afternoon, and it was a very hot and sweaty climb, be prepared! We may have made things slightly harder by leaving the paved path and winding round the outside of the old wall though, which meant a lot more clambering and less shade, but some pretty wonderful views! Instead of looking back down towards Assos, going round this side meant we could see across the bay towards Myrtos and also had the late afternoon sun making everything glow as we walked.
It was easy to imagine we were secretly sneaking up on this hill top fortress from the rocks, albeit with a lot of stopping for photos, stumbling and loudly exclaiming how blue the water beneath us was.

We persevered with getting to the highest point that we could, my face slowly getting closer and closer to neon red. It transpired that the best views were those on the path back down the paved route and the alternative side path we had already taken, but that sense of achievement from crawling up that last ruined stair was still worth it. The sweat dripping down my nose, the sound of my my panting and the tinkle of goat bells… all synonymous with a great Greek hike.

Once down at the bottom and cooled off a bit, we had a little amble to explore all the little side streets. I was mildly entertained to realise that some of the ‘instagram’ shots I had seen of this beautiful place, were absolutely taken from bits of random front porch of someones home. It was surprisingly hard to find somewhere with the view down to that picture perfect row of coloured houses with the water on both sides. Regardless, it’s just an unbelievably picturesque place.

Only a few hours after arriving, we were driving back up away from Assos having arranged a pick up time with the taxi driver we had taken on the way there. The pro of this was he dropped us to our door so all we had to do for the rest of the day was shower and go for a short, flat stroll to dinner back in Fiskardo. A very good holiday afternoon!
