Kathara monastery is situated at the highest point of Ithaca. The winding scooter ride that had us circling the crags of the island as we slowly rose up and up here was rewarding enough, that initially once we alighted it felt like the destination was just the cherry on top.
However just a few steps away from our parking spot of the scootered propped up by a crumbling low stone wall in a large dusty bowl a little down from the monastery, it became clear that this was a very special spot and this is one of my favourite memories of the trip looking back.

On one side, all we could see was mist with the sun just beginning to sink behind it, and the sound of goat bells tinkling through it. Walking up a little bit more, on the other side we had a beautiful vista of Ithaca spread out before us, with music from the monastery to the right softly coming through in the background. Aside from the mentioned, yet for all intents and purposes, invisible goats, we were alone as we looked down at the harbour and curves of Ithaca and the mainland of Greece behind it faintly glinting through the hazy sun.

One of those places where it feels impossible to not be in the moment any savour as many details as you can.
